The Lake Victoria Basin Water Board has launched a major exercise to identify deep water wells, collect water samples, and monitor industries discharging effluents in Mwanza City and Ilemela Municipality. The initiative is part of preparations for the 2026 National Water Week.
Dr. Renatus Shinhu, Director of the Board, said the exercise will help generate accurate data to improve management and ensure sustainable use of water resources.
“The exercise will enable us to map deep wells and industries that discharge effluents using GIS technology. We will also collect water samples from 45 wells and 10 industries, and train well and industry owners to use the Water Use Management Information System (WUMIS) for water permits,” he explained.
The exercise is implemented in partnership with key stakeholders, including the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and local authorities of Mwanza City and Ilemela Municipality.
The 2026 National Water Week will be held under the theme: “Water and Gender.”
