More than TZS 14.9 billion has been invested in the construction of the Kabalisi and Sange bridges in Ileje District, projects expected to strengthen road connectivity and improve transport between communities in Songwe and Mbeya regions.

The Deputy Minister for Works, Godfrey Kasekenya, has instructed contractors building the bridges to ensure the projects are completed by March 30 this year.

During an inspection visit to the construction sites, Eng. Kasekenya directed JASCO, the contractor responsible for constructing the 40-metre Kabalisi Bridge, and GEMEN, which is building the 40-metre Sange Bridge, to speed up work while maintaining the required construction standards.

He said the bridges are important infrastructure that will support the development of the surrounding areas and improve mobility for residents and businesses.

Eng. Kasekenya also emphasised the need to install lighting systems on the bridges and ensure that drainage channels around the structures are properly cleaned and maintained to protect the infrastructure.

He said the quality of the bridges must match the standards required for future asphalt roads that are expected to be built along the route.

“Ensure the construction of these bridges meets the designed standards so that they match the asphalt roads that will be constructed,” said Eng. Kasekenya.

The project supervisor, Eng. Jonas Matete from the Tanzania National Roads Agency Road Management Unit, said contractors are being closely supervised to ensure the bridges are completed on time and meet the required quality.

He noted that the bridges are located in hilly areas and once completed they will improve transport and create social and economic opportunities for residents.

The Kabalisi and Sange bridges are part of the Ibungu–Kalembo–Kafwafwa–Kimo regional road, which stretches 46.1 kilometres and connects Ileje District with Rungwe District.

Once completed, the bridges are expected to improve the movement of people and goods, strengthen regional connectivity and support economic activities in the two neighbouring districts.
