The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency healthcare services through closer collaboration with the private sector, including a new initiative to manufacture ambulances locally in Tanga Region.
The move is expected to improve access to life-saving emergency services while creating new employment opportunities and supporting the growth of local industries.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on March 5, 2026 during a preparatory meeting on the planned ambulance production project, Tanga Regional Commissioner Batilda Burian said the government welcomes the investment being undertaken in partnership with SO Company Limited.
She said the project reflects the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure that communities across the country have timely access to emergency medical services.
Ms Burian noted that manufacturing ambulances locally will increase the availability of modern emergency vehicles and reduce the time it takes to reach patients who require urgent medical care.
“The production of ambulances within the country will make it easier to distribute them to different regions, particularly remote and underserved areas,” she said.
She added that the initiative will not only enhance healthcare delivery but also generate economic benefits, including job creation for young people and expanded opportunities for local suppliers involved in producing vehicle components and medical equipment.
The Acting Director of Emergency and Disaster Services at the Ministry of Health, Erasto Sylvanus, said the government will continue to provide a supportive environment for investors to ensure the project succeeds.
Dr Sylvanus said strengthening emergency response systems remains a priority for the government as part of efforts to improve healthcare services and protect lives.
The planned project is expected to significantly improve emergency healthcare delivery in Tanzania while opening new opportunities for employment and industrial growth.
