The Secretary-General of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Asha-Rose Migiro, held talks on March 11, 2026 with Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the African Union.

The meeting took place in Dodoma as part of the envoy’s official consultations with various national stakeholders regarding Tanzania’s political outlook following the General Election held on October 29, 2025.

Mr Onanga-Anyanga also serves as the head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) based in Addis Ababa and is currently in Tanzania as the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

According to CCM, the discussions focused on exchanging views on Tanzania’s political developments after the elections and broader efforts aimed at strengthening peace, democracy and national unity.

During the meeting, Ms Migiro reiterated Tanzania’s long-standing commitment to democratic governance, peaceful political participation and respect for the rule of law.

She said the country continues to be guided by international and regional frameworks, including the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The CCM Secretary-General also highlighted reforms undertaken in the electoral system, including the enactment of new election laws in 2024 and other measures aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and public trust in the electoral process.

The talks also touched on incidents of violence reported in some parts of the country during and after the elections, which resulted in loss of lives and damage to property, including attacks on CCM offices.

Both sides emphasised the importance of continued dialogue and reconciliation among national stakeholders to maintain peace and stability.

Ms Migiro also assured the envoy that Tanzania would continue working closely with the international community in promoting peace, security and inclusive development.

CCM further commended the strong cooperation between Tanzania and the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening national unity, stability and democratic governance in the United Republic of Tanzania.
