Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in Kilosa District, Morogoro Region, destroying infrastructure, submerging homes, and claiming the life of a 70-year-old woman in Kidete Station as she attempted to cross the swollen Mkondoa River.
Kilosa District Commissioner, Shaka Hamdu Shaka, said the March 9 downpour affected Miyombo, Mhenda, and Mkata Station, leaving more than 100 homes in Miyombo damaged by floodwaters.
“The road from Kilosa to Muhenda has reopened, but major repairs are needed due to the extent of the destruction,” he said.
DC Shaka warned that rising waters in the Mkondoa River could further threaten nearby communities. Authorities are deploying emergency measures to prevent additional harm.
Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Malima, who visited the Mikumi–Ifakara road following the collapse of the fourth bridge in Mikumi on March 9, urged residents and motorists to remain patient as repair work continues. The collapse disrupted travel and transport services, leaving locals stranded.
RC Malima directed TANROADS engineers to work day and night to restore the bridge and ensure safe passage.
“Immediate efforts are underway to reinforce a section of the road to ease movement. Heavy vehicle operators are advised to exercise patience until the bridge is fully repaired,” he said. He also called for regular inspections of bridges to protect lives and property.
Patrick Rambika, Acting TANROADS Morogoro Manager, said the bridge failure halted traffic along the Mikumi–Ifakara corridor, affecting both passengers and goods transport.
Residents have urged the government to fast-track repairs, noting that the road is a crucial link for the region’s transportation and commerce.
As heavy rains continue, authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas, while emergency response teams are working to prevent further loss of life and infrastructure damage.
