Twiga Stars aim high ahead of WAFCON showdown

Tanzania’s women’s national football team, Twiga Stars, have voiced strong confidence ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in March this year, saying lessons from past experience have strengthened their readiness for the continental stage.

Speaking from Egypt, where the team is undergoing intensive preparations, players Stumai Abdallah and Janet Pangamwene said the squad is determined to post improved results and make a meaningful impact at the tournament.

Stumai said the team has set high expectations, noting that last year’s participation provided valuable exposure despite challenging outcomes.

She explained that the technical bench carefully reviewed the team’s performance and addressed weaknesses that emerged during the previous campaign.

She added that discipline and strict adherence to coaches’ instructions, both on and off the pitch, remain central to the team’s preparation strategy.

“We are confident of doing better this year because last year we were newcomers in the competition and learned many important lessons. The areas where we fell short have been improved, and this has boosted our confidence,” said Stumai.

Janet Pangamwene echoed similar sentiments, saying the players have committed themselves to collective responsibility and clear roles as they pursue their objectives at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

She noted that the team is fully focused on securing positive results in every match to ensure progression to the knockout stages.

“Last year we lost two matches and drew one, which denied us a place in the next round. This year our morale is very high, and we are determined to fight for better results,” she said.

As preparations continue in Egypt, Twiga Stars believe improved experience, unity, and tactical discipline will be key as they seek to raise Tanzania’s profile in women’s football across Africa.
