The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has taken a bold step in combining sports with civic responsibility. On February 18, 2026, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda officially launched the Management Board of the newly established football team, TRA United Sports Club, at the TRA offices in Dar es Salaam.
The initiative aims not only to develop a competitive football team but also to educate Tanzanians on the importance of voluntarily paying taxes, which is vital for the country’s economic growth.
Commissioner Mwenda urged the TRA United Board to fully manage the team and ensure it becomes a top contender in both local and international leagues.
He stressed the need for discipline and professionalism so that the team serves as a model for other clubs across the country.
“Our goal is to connect TRA’s mission with citizens’ participation in understanding the value of paying taxes voluntarily. I trust that the Board will take every step necessary to make citizens see tax compliance as a civic duty,” said Mwenda.
The team will also offer a platform for players, including international stars, to contribute to the economy through taxes on their salaries, further linking sports to national development.
Recognizing the unifying power of sports, Commissioner Mwenda highlighted that TRA United will serve as a mirror for excellence in Tanzanian sports while promoting civic education.
He also noted that the initiative aligns with the long-term goals of Vision 2050, where TRA, as a key engine of national revenue, seeks innovative ways to enhance revenue collection, including through sports.
Chairman of the TRA United Board, Edmund Kawamala, praised Commissioner Mwenda for the visionary initiative.
He emphasized that the Board will work to ensure the team not only succeeds on the field but also spreads awareness about taxes to Tanzanians in an engaging and impactful way.
“Most citizens enjoy football. TRA United will use this love for the sport to educate and inspire citizens to see tax payment as part of their civic responsibility,” Kawamala said.
The TRA United Board is made up of eight additional members, including former Secretary General of the Tanzania Football Federation, Dr. Wilfred Kidao, Chairperson of the Private Sector Foundation Tanzania, Angelina Ngalula, and TRA staff members Juma Kisongo, Kamna Shomari, Zahoro Salum, Paul Walalaze, and Elikunda Mndeme. One final Board position is expected to be filled soon.
This version highlights what the initiative means for citizens, focusing on civic responsibility, economic growth, and the positive role of sports.
