Tengeru–Mirerani road set for tarmac upgrade ahead of AFCON 2027

The government has directed the Ministry of Works to begin construction of the 28-kilometre Tengeru–Mirerani road to tarmac standard, a project expected to improve traffic flow in Arusha and strengthen infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The directive was issued by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba during a foundation stone–laying ceremony for student hostels at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha.

Dr Nchemba said upgrading the road would enhance connectivity between Arusha and surrounding areas, reduce pressure on existing urban routes and support economic activities, including mining, tourism and trade.

Deputy Minister for Works Godfrey Kasekenya said the Ministry of Works, through the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), would deploy three contractors simultaneously to ensure the project is completed on time.

He said the road is among key projects earmarked to support Tanzania’s co-hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, noting that timely completion would provide an important alternative tarmac route and ease congestion in Arusha.

Eng Kasekenya added that, as part of AFCON preparations, major roads in Arusha City would be fitted with street lighting and decorated with event branding, measures aimed at improving safety, visibility and the city’s appearance ahead of the continental tournament.
