Finance Minister, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar (MP), has urged Tanzania’s telecommunications sector to play a key role in implementing the recently launched National Development Vision 2050.
Speaking during a meeting with Vodacom Tanzania leadership, chaired by Board Chairman Mr. David Tarimo at Treasury Square, Dodoma, Ambassador Omar said the sector is crucial in driving inclusive economic growth through digital reforms, tax contributions, and improved social services.
He called on telecom companies to seize opportunities offered by Vision 2050, particularly by using technology to create wealth and empower youth.
“The government will continue improving the investment environment to strengthen the sector’s contribution to citizens’ welfare while ensuring profitable returns for investors,” he said.
Vodacom Board Chairman Mr. Tarimo thanked the government for providing a favorable business environment, noting that the sector contributed over TZS 1.1 trillion in taxes in the 2024/2025 financial year, with Vodacom alone paying more than TZS 621 billion by March 2025.
He added that since its launch, Vodacom has invested over TZS 4.5 trillion in building telecom infrastructure and supported communities with over TZS 3.7 billion last year in health, education, environmental projects, and youth economic empowerment.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Finance Minister Hon. Eng. Mshamu Ali Munde (MP), Acting Commissioner for Financial Sector Development Ms. Dionisia Mjema, Vodacom CEO Mr. Philip Besiimire, Director of External Affairs Ms. Zuweina Farah, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and Vodacom.
