Tanzania moves to strengthen oversight of accommodation services

Authorities and industry stakeholders have met in Dodoma to address the growing need for regulation and quality assurance in Tanzania’s accommodation sector.

The meeting, held at the TANAPA Hall in the Kambarage Building, brought together experts from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, alongside key institutions including the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Dodoma City Council, Immigration, the Ministry of Health, the Tanzania Police Force, and the Tanzania Tourism Board.

Speaking on behalf of the Secretary-General, the Assistant Director of the Tourism Department, Mr. Richie Wandwi, emphasized that tourism is among Tanzania’s fastest-growing economic sectors.

The rise in both domestic and international tourists has increased demand for quality accommodation services, presenting opportunities for businesses such as homestays and apartments.

Many of these operators now use digital platforms like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Tripadvisor to market and sell their services.

However, Mr. Wandwi warned that unregulated operations pose risks. “The rapid growth of online-based homestays and apartments that do not comply with legal requirements affects government revenue from tourism business licenses and can tarnish the country’s image when tourists experience substandard services,” he said.

The meeting focused on promoting compliance with legal frameworks, including the Tourism Act, Chapter 65, which requires all accommodation services to be registered, licensed, and meet safety and quality standards.

Officials emphasized the need for collaboration between government agencies and business operators to ensure tourists receive safe and reliable services, while the sector continues to contribute to Tanzania’s economic growth.
