TANAPA prepares new strategic plan to strengthen conservation and tourism

Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has begun preparations for a new five-year Strategic Plan for 2026/2027–2030/2031, as the current plan for 2020/2021–2025/2026 approaches its conclusion on June 30, 2026.

A team of experts from TANAPA’s departments and units convened in Dodoma on February 2, 2026, to review the past plan and chart the way forward.

The new strategy will guide the management of 21 national parks, five recreational centers, and three liaison offices in Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, and Zanzibar, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency in conservation and tourism operations.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Conservation, Sekela Mwangota, who leads the strategic plan preparations, said the new plan will focus on expanding tourism offerings, strengthening ecosystems through wildlife treatment programs, and ensuring adequate water supply in parks most affected by climate change, including Mikumi, Mkomazi, Katavi, and Saadani.

“The plan also seeks to diversify revenue sources so TANAPA can sustain its conservation efforts even during disruptions, such as those experienced during COVID-19 in 2019,” he added.

The draft plan emphasizes robust monitoring and evaluation, starting with baseline assessments and setting annual targets for each department or unit.

Progress will be tracked through performance reports, research, customer satisfaction surveys, and statistical data to ensure TANAPA is on course to meet its objectives.

Dr. Wilhelm Kiwango, a University of Dodoma lecturer facilitating the planning process, highlighted that a results-oriented plan depends on accurate data, professional expertise, strategic prioritization, and efficient use of resources to maintain high service delivery standards for clients.

Once approved, the Strategic Plan will provide TANAPA with a clear roadmap to achieve its goals, aligning with the National Development Vision 2050, government policies, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism’s renewed priorities and direction.
