The extension of electricity to remote hamlets in Katavi Region is expected to significantly boost agro-processing, raise the value of farm produce and create jobs, as the government rolls out a TZS57.3 billion rural electrification project under the Rural Energy Agency (REA).
Regional Commissioner Mwanamvua Mrindoto said the REA Phase Two B (HEP 2B) project will transform the region’s agriculture-based economy by enabling farmers and entrepreneurs to process crops locally instead of selling them as raw produce.
She made the remarks on Thursday while introducing M/s ETDCO Ltd, the contractor tasked with implementing the project, which will connect electricity to 358 hamlets and benefit more than 11,536 residents across the region.
“With the availability of electricity, we will move from selling raw produce to selling processed products. This will improve quality, increase prices and ensure our farmers earn more from what they produce,” Ms Mrindoto said.
She noted that reliable power supply will stimulate economic growth, attract investment and expand employment opportunities for youths, women, the elderly and other social groups in Katavi.
The Regional Commissioner urged the contractor to deliver the project on time, saying residents are eager to access electricity services.
“What people want is electricity, not words or promises. The contractor must work with speed and commitment to complete the project as planned,” she said.
Representing the REA Director General, Mr Mussa Muze said the HEP 2B project aims to expand access to electricity in rural hamlets while supporting inclusive social and economic development in the region.
REA Katavi Regional Project Manager, Eng. Gilbert Furia, called on residents to cooperate with contractors during implementation and to use the new power supply as a catalyst for improving household incomes and local businesses.
Meanwhile, M/s ETDCO Ltd representative Eng. Abdalah Mitenda said the project will prioritise local labour and contractors, encouraging residents to seize employment and business opportunities that will arise during construction.
The rural electrification drive is part of the government’s wider strategy to promote value addition, industrialisation and sustainable economic growth in Tanzania’s regions.
