Prime Minister launches new Mbatakero Secondary School in Kilimanjaro

Prime Minister Dkt. Mwigulu Nchemba has officially laid the foundation stone for the new Mbatakero Secondary School in Hai District, Kilimanjaro Region. The school has been constructed under the SEQUIP project and is expected to significantly improve access to secondary education for local students.

The construction, costing TZS 584 million, will ease the burden on students who previously had to walk long distances to attend neighboring secondary schools in Roo and Longoi, each located about nine kilometers from Mbatakero Village. The new school will also help reduce overcrowding in these nearby schools.

Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Dkt. Mwigulu emphasized that the project reflects President Dkt. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to addressing citizens’ challenges.

“When the President is informed of a problem, she instructs leaders to resolve it. This is exactly what has happened here, where students had to travel long distances. In the past four years, President Samia has built over 1,300 secondary schools and fully resolved the so-called ‘Second Selection’ challenge,” he said.

Dkt. Mwigulu also praised the Hai District Council leadership for their management of the project, including Council Director Dionis Myinga, Council Chairperson Edmund Rutaraka, the district engineer, and the secondary education officer.

He noted that TZS 4 million had been retained to furnish the school with office furniture, ensuring a smooth start for students and staff.

The new Mbatakero Secondary School is expected to provide local children with better access to quality education and contribute to the ongoing efforts to strengthen Tanzania’s education sector.
