President Samia to inaugurate Kariakoo Market Extension

Dar es Salaam is set to witness a major boost to its commercial infrastructure as President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officially inaugurate the Kariakoo Market Extension on February 8, 2026, in a move aimed at improving trade efficiency and urban order in the city.

The inauguration, to be held in the early hours of the morning at Kariakoo, marks the completion of one of the government’s flagship urban development projects designed to decongest the historic Kariakoo Market and provide traders with a modern, safe and well-organised trading environment.

Implemented under the supervision of the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner’s Office, the project reflects the Sixth Phase Government’s broader agenda of strengthening small and medium enterprises by investing in supportive infrastructure.

The new market extension is expected to accommodate thousands of traders who have long operated under congested and informal conditions.

Officials say the facility has been designed to meet modern standards of safety, hygiene and accessibility, while also improving customer experience and business efficiency.

Beyond easing congestion, the market extension is expected to enhance revenue collection, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity within the city.

Traders and residents have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention that will help restore order and dignity in one of Tanzania’s busiest commercial centres.

Many believe the new facility will contribute to the long-term transformation of Kariakoo into a competitive and sustainable trading hub.

The inauguration aligns with the national development message emphasising people-centred growth and inclusive economic progress, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring that development projects directly improve the livelihoods of citizens.

The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner’s Office has encouraged the public to follow the event through official government communication platforms as the city marks another milestone in its urban development journey.
