The people of Lushoto District are celebrating a major boost in healthcare after the inauguration of a new medical oxygen production plant at Lushoto District Hospital

The project, made possible through government funding, is already saving lives especially those of newborns, pregnant women, and seriously ill patients.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, expressed deep gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for allocating five billion Tanzanian shillings that enabled the Government to equip hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries, including the new oxygen plant.

Prof. Shemdoe shared a personal testimony, explaining that in 2020, oxygen therapy saved his life at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital, and in September 2025, he relied on oxygen from Lushoto District Hospital during transfer to Muhimbili National Hospital for treatment.

“This plant is a game-changer for healthcare in Lushoto,” said Prof. Shemdoe. “It will continue saving lives of mothers, children, and all patients in need of oxygen therapy.”

Biomedical Engineer for Lushoto District, Mr. Paschal Protace, highlighted that the oxygen plant is particularly vital for premature babies and pregnant women, who often require immediate oxygen support.

Local resident, Ms. Khadija Rashidi, praised the facility for helping her newborn survive. “Thanks to this plant and the incubator, my baby received clean oxygen and warmth until fully healthy,” she said.

Nurse Theodora Tesha of Lushoto District Hospital confirmed that child mortality has dropped significantly since the plant became operational.

“We no longer face shortages of oxygen, and we can provide continuous care to newborns and expectant mothers,” she explained.

The new oxygen plant marks a significant step forward for healthcare in Lushoto, ensuring that residents have access to lifesaving medical services close to home.

It is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of citizens.
