The government has taken a bold step to expand deep mineral exploration across Tanzania with the launch of a modern helicopter equipped for mineral surveys.
Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde (MP), inaugurated the helicopter today, February 1, 2026, in Buzwagi, Kahama District, marking the start of a new survey by Barrick Gold to support the establishment of a major mining project.
“Through the 2030 Mineral Vision Minerals are Life and Wealth President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed us to expand deep mineral exploration through both government and private sector initiatives,” Minister Mavunde said.
“Today’s launch is a clear step towards realizing that vision. We thank Barrick for supporting these efforts with practical action.”he added
The survey will cover key areas including Msalala, Nzega, Igunga, Mbogwe, and Nyangh’wale. The data collected will guide the establishment of a new mine.
Minister Mavunde also instructed that areas unsuitable for large-scale mining be allocated to small-scale miners, ensuring responsible extraction and reducing speculative operations.
Barrick Tanzania Resident Manager, Dr. Melkiory Ngido, said the company has invested over TZS 100 billion in deep mineral exploration since 2020. Its three operating mines have contributed more than TZS 14 trillion to the domestic economy.
Shinyanga Regional Commissioner, Mboni Mhita, commended the government for creating a favorable investment environment that encourages companies like Barrick to expand operations in Tanzania.
MPs for Kahama Town, Benjamin Ngayiwa, and Msalala, Mabula Magangila, also praised the government’s efforts, noting that new projects are expected to create jobs and boost local economic growth.
The initiative is part of the government’s plan to increase the country’s deep mineral exploration coverage to 50 percent by 2030, a key target under the national mining strategy.
