Tour guide Muhsini Juma says the cave’s reputation has grown over time. “Many young people today face challenges in finding a spouse. Those who visit this cave and sincerely express their intentions often succeed. We have numerous testimonies from visitors who later return to thank us,” he explained.
Visitors may come with a specific person in mind, naming them during the ritual, or they may express a general desire to marry this year, specifying the qualities they seek in a partner. Muhsini adds, “It doesn’t take long before the intended person appears, often ready to formalize the relationship.”
Beyond matters of love and marriage, Fatuma Cave is also used for rituals seeking blessings for children, rainfall, employment, and other personal needs.
Visitors perform the ceremonies quietly, respecting the customs and traditions that have been preserved for generations.
Elder Yassin explains that proper preparation is crucial. “Anyone entering the cave must be clean. Men or women who have recently been intimate without cleansing may face complications with the rituals. Following the traditional guidance ensures the rituals work as intended,” he says.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Authority has put in place measures to protect the cultural and spiritual significance of the cave while allowing believers to carry out their rituals safely.
