The Government has successfully completed a feasibility study and detailed engineering design for the upgrading of the Mombo–Lushoto road, a key 32-kilometre route that connects communities in Lushoto District, Tanga Region.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Godfrey Kasekenya, during an official visit by the Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, to Lushoto District as part of his regional development tour.
Eng. Kasekenya stated that the road upgrade is a strategic Government initiative aimed at improving transport efficiency and accelerating economic growth in the district.
He noted that the improved road infrastructure will directly support key productive sectors, including tourism, tea farming, horticulture (vegetables and fruits), and the timber industry sectors that form the backbone of the local economy and livelihoods.
He further explained that the Ministry of Works, through the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), has also planned the construction of the Soni–Bumbuli–Dindira–Old Korogwe road (74 km) to bitumen standard.
This road will provide a reliable tarmac connection between Lushoto and Korogwe districts, passing through mountainous areas with high agricultural production potential.
According to Eng. Kasekenya, the first phase of the project will cover the Soni–Bumbuli section (22 km) on the Lushoto side and the Kwameta–Kwashemshi section (9.3 km) on the Korogwe side.
Once completed, the road is expected to reduce travel time, lower transport costs, improve access to markets, and enhance service delivery for citizens.
The Prime Minister concluded his five-day tour of Tanga Region after inspecting development projects in Handeni, Kilindi, Pangani, Muheza, Mkinga, Tanga, Korogwe, and Lushoto districts.
He called upon citizens to safeguard and properly maintain public infrastructure to ensure it continues to deliver long-term economic and social benefits for current and future generations.
