Residents of Mkinga have been assured that the government will construct a new road to Mzumbe University’s Tanga Campus.

Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), confirmed that in the 2026/27 financial year budget, funds will be allocated through TARURA to build a 16-kilometer gravel road connecting the campus to the main TANROADS highway. This will make travel to the campus much easier for students, staff, and visitors.

Prof. Shemdoe made the announcement on February 15, 2026, following a request from Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Mchemba to address concerns about the poor condition of the existing road.

The issue had been raised by Mkinga Member of Parliament, Twaha Said Mwakioja, and university officials during the foundation stone-laying ceremony at the campus.

“To reach Mzumbe University Tanga Campus, there is a 16-kilometer stretch that will be upgraded. In the 2026/27 budget, we will ensure funds are set aside to build this road to a gravel standard,” Prof. Shemdoe said.

He also addressed the internal campus roads, which total five kilometers. He promised to work with university management to prioritize the repairs. Initially, two kilometers will be paved with asphalt, while plans will be made to complete the remaining three kilometers.

Prof. Shemdoe added that the Prime Minister’s Office – PMO-RALG continues to actively support government efforts to improve road infrastructure through TARURA, especially in implementing directives from top leaders during inspections of development projects.

This development is expected to improve access to education and support the growth of Mzumbe University’s Tanga Campus, benefiting the local community and students alike.
