The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, has directed the Ministry of Works to prioritize the completion of road construction projects that were approved earlier before initiating new ones, in order to improve efficiency and ensure effective use of public resources.
Speaking during his official visit to Kilindi District in Tanga Region, Dr. Nchemba said completing ongoing projects will strengthen project management, reduce implementation delays, and enhance accountability in government development initiatives.
He instructed the ministry to ensure the completion of the Handeni–Mafuleta–Kileguru road (50 km) before commencing construction of the Kileguru–Songe section (63 km).
“Completing projects that have already been signed and started will enable the government to implement development plans in a more coordinated and sustainable manner,” he emphasized.
The Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Godfrey Kasekenya, said the government has planned to upgrade the entire Handeni–Kiberashi–Kwamtoro–Singida road (434.33 km) to tarmac standard as part of efforts to enhance transport efficiency and regional connectivity.
He noted that the project will strengthen operations at the Port of Tanga by providing a shorter and more reliable transport corridor linking the port with central regions and the Lake Zone.
Eng. Kasekenya added that the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) are in the final stages of implementing the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
In addition, the government plans to construct tarmac roads along the Songe–Chakwale–Ngilori and Songe–Vyadigwa–Mziha–Turiani routes.
These projects are expected to improve accessibility in Kilindi District and Morogoro Region and support broader economic activities, including agriculture and livestock production.
Dr. Nchemba is in Tanga Region on a three-day tour to inspect development projects and engage with local leaders as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and accelerate national development initiatives.
