The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project has reached a significant milestone, with the first shipment of crude oil expected to pass through Chongoleani Port in Tanga Region by July 2026, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced.

President Samia made the announcement on February 7, 2026, following talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House, Dar es Salaam.

She said the progress reflects the strong partnership between Tanzania and Uganda in implementing one of East Africa’s most strategic infrastructure projects.

During the discussions, the two leaders also explored plans for additional strategic pipelines. These include a natural gas pipeline from Tanzania to Uganda and a refined petroleum products pipeline from Uganda to Tanzania, destined for international markets.

The new pipelines are expected to follow the EACOP corridor, maximizing existing infrastructure and strengthening regional economic integration.

The EACOP pipeline, stretching from Uganda’s oil fields to Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast, is set to create jobs, boost trade, and position Tanzania as a major energy transit hub in the region once operations commence.
