Zungu, India’s Speaker hold talks to strengthen parliamentary ties

The Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Mussa Azzan Zungu, has held talks with the Speaker of India’s Lok Sabha, Mr. Om Birla, aimed at strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting took place at the Indian Parliament in New Delhi, where Mr. Zungu paid a courtesy call on his counterpart on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, currently underway in India.


Discussions focused on deepening collaboration in parliamentary procedures, legislative effectiveness, and oversight roles, as well as exchanging experiences on how parliaments can better serve citizens through effective law-making and accountability.

The two Speakers reaffirmed the long-standing and friendly relations between Tanzania and India, highlighting the role of parliamentary diplomacy in reinforcing bilateral ties and advancing shared democratic values within the Commonwealth.

Mr. Zungu praised India’s experience in parliamentary management and institutional development, noting that such engagements are vital for strengthening Tanzania’s Parliament. 


In turn, Mr. Birla expressed India’s readiness to continue supporting cooperation through capacity-building initiatives and knowledge exchange.

The 28th Commonwealth Speakers’ Conference brings together parliamentary leaders from member states to deliberate on governance, democracy, and inclusive development, providing a platform for sharing best practices to improve parliamentary performance.
