Zanzibar is set to benefit directly from more jobs, training opportunities, and affordable chicken as the islands achieve self-sufficiency in poultry production, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has announced.
The President made the announcement while inaugurating the Zan Breed Limited Poultry Farm Project, a USD 105 million investment expected to create over 1,000 jobs for local communities.
“This project is designed with our people in mind. Smallholder farmers, youth, and women will gain access to training, quality chicks, feed, veterinary services, and guaranteed markets,” Dr. Mwinyi said.
The farm has the capacity to produce 800,000 chickens each month and features poultry clinics, a feed processing plant, laboratories, and a water treatment system.
By increasing local production, the initiative will reduce Zanzibar’s dependence on imported chicken and make poultry more affordable for families.
Dr. Mwinyi also directed the Ministry of Empowerment and the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure small-scale farmers receive interest-free loans, technical guidance, and market support.
“We are turning this project into a platform to empower farmers across Zanzibar, enabling them to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods,” he added.
The project is expected to boost Zanzibar’s livestock sector and wider economy, while also supporting youth employment and skill development.
Families are likely to see the benefits immediately through better access to nutritious and affordable chicken, while farmers gain opportunities to increase their income and expand their businesses.
“This is not just a big investment; it is an investment in our people,” Dr. Mwinyi said. “It will provide jobs, support families, and strengthen Zanzibar’s economy for generations to come.”
