Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reiterated the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar’s commitment to making the digital economy a top priority in driving economic management, public service delivery, and revenue collection.

Speaking on January 26, 2026, during a meeting with Tanzania’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Ms. Angellah Kairuki, and senior ministry officials at the State House in Zanzibar, President Mwinyi said the adoption of digital systems is central to improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in government operations.

He stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between Union and Zanzibar ministries, calling for the fast-tracking of the construction of Zanzibar’s Data Centre, upgrades to telecommunications infrastructure, and expanded access to high-speed internet to support businesses, institutions, and citizens.

“The digital economy is a key pillar for Zanzibar’s socio-economic transformation. We must ensure our systems are modern, secure, and accessible to enhance service delivery and support sustainable development,” President Mwinyi said.

The President noted that digitalisation will not only improve public administration but also enhance revenue collection, reduce operational costs, and create new economic opportunities, particularly for youth and the private sector.

For her part, Minister Kairuki assured President Mwinyi of her ministry’s continued commitment to working closely with Zanzibar to ensure the availability of secure, reliable, and high-quality communication services that meet both national and international standards.

She said the government remains focused on strengthening ICT infrastructure, expanding internet connectivity, and promoting digital innovation to support national development goals.

The meeting reflects the growing emphasis by both Union and Zanzibar governments on leveraging technology as a catalyst for economic growth, improved governance, and inclusive development.
