TAWA's innovation brings safer communities and stronger tourism

Tanzania’s efforts to protect wildlife are increasingly delivering real benefits to its citizens, thanks to the innovative work of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA).

The outgoing Board of Directors has played a key role in improving conservation, boosting tourism revenue, and ensuring the safety of communities living near wildlife areas.

Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, commended the Board in Arusha while receiving its performance report.

She said the Board’s strategies align with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision for sustainable conservation, ensuring Tanzania’s natural heritage serves both the nation and future generations.

“The Board’s work has increased tourism investment and revenue, which supports local communities and strengthens conservation efforts,” Dr. Kijaji said.

“At the same time, it has reduced illegal activities in protected areas and improved the use of technology to safeguard wildlife in even the most remote regions.”she added

Retired Major General Hamis Semfuko, TAWA Board Chair, highlighted another achievement: faster and more effective responses to dangerous wildlife incidents.

Special TAWA units now work closely with Village Game Scouts (VGS), protecting both people and wildlife while creating safer rural communities.

Deputy Secretary Nkoba Mabula assured Minister Kijaji that the Ministry will use the Board’s report to further improve conservation and tourism initiatives, ensuring that citizens continue to benefit directly.

Thanks to these efforts, Tanzanians are seeing tangible results: safer villages, increased income from tourism, and stronger protection for the country’s unique wildlife.

For communities living near wildlife areas, TAWA’s work is not just about protecting animals it is about protecting livelihoods, safety, and opportunities for growth.
