Tanzania to get modern mineral laboratory in Dodoma

By The Respondents Reporter

The Ministry of Minerals has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art laboratory in Nala, Dodoma, aimed at improving the testing and analysis of mineral samples.

The facility is expected to serve as a key hub for mineral services in sub-Saharan Africa.

Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, revealed the plan while briefing journalists on the progress of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s 100-Day achievements during the second phase of the sixth government term.

“The laboratory will not only enhance the accuracy of mineral testing but also create significant economic opportunities for Tanzania and our neighboring countries. It will strengthen the skills and capacity of local experts,” said Minister Mavunde.

The Ministry has partnered with GST to ensure the laboratory becomes a central point for mineral services in the region.

Adding value to Tanzania’s minerals remains a top priority. The Ministry is fast-tracking the construction of processing factories, including six gold refining plants and other facilities for various minerals.

On licensing, the Ministry is moving toward an E-Licensing system that allows applicants to secure licenses without visiting the offices in person.

Applicants will receive their licenses and are expected to submit research reports within three months.

Minister Mavunde reported that the Ministry successfully issued 12,130 licenses, reaching 117.8% of the 2024/2025 annual target. Between July and December 2025 alone, 8,418 licenses were granted, surpassing the period’s target by 47%.

He also noted that from November 2025 to January 2026, 2,376 licenses were issued. Meanwhile, 73 exploration and mining licenses were revoked between July and December 2025 due to violations such as failure to develop the allocated sites.

Some of these areas will now be reallocated to small-scale miners, youth, and women involved in the Mining for a Brighter Tomorrow (MBT) program, further promoting inclusive growth in the sector.
