The Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Pool as a competitive sport, with the goal of strengthening national talent and ensuring strong representation in international competitions.
Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, made the remarks during a meeting with leaders of the Tanzania Pool Table Association (TAPA). The discussions focused on the development of Pool, challenges facing the sport, and opportunities to expand its reach and impact across the country.
Deputy Minister Mwinjuma emphasized that the government will continue supporting sports that achieve success in African and global competitions, noting that such achievements enhance Tanzania’s image abroad.
He highlighted that this recognition reinforces the government’s commitment to investing in sports and motivating athletes.
He further underscored that improving sports infrastructure and environments is crucial for nurturing talent and fostering competitiveness both nationally and internationally.
Mwinjuma also noted that sports contribute significantly to national unity, job creation, and Tanzania’s visibility on the global stage.
Pool mentor Mrisho Mpoto expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts in changing public perceptions of Pool.
He noted that the sport was once viewed merely as casual recreation, but it is now recognized as a competitive and productive activity that benefits youth and the nation as a whole.
TAPA Chairman Wilfred Makamba confirmed that preparations for the national Pool team are progressing smoothly.
He explained that discussions with the Deputy Minister focused on team readiness and essential requirements, with all plans moving forward as scheduled.
Makamba revealed that the national team is set to enter a training camp today at Sniper Billiard Arena in Sinza, Dar es Salaam, in preparation for the All Africa Pool Championship, scheduled for February in South Africa.
“Our preparations are on track. The team will begin official training today at Sniper Billiard Arena as we gear up for the championship,” Makamba said.
He added that TAPA’s objective is to ensure the team performs at its best, competing for victory to showcase Tanzania’s talent and elevate the country’s reputation in African sports.
Makamba also urged sports stakeholders, including businesses and institutions, to support the national Pool team by helping fund training, travel, and other essential needs to enable top-level preparation for international competitions.
