Tanzania, Holy See strengthen ties in Vatican diplomatic meeting

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania and the Holy See have reinforced their long-standing diplomatic ties following a high-level meeting at the Vatican between Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and Pope Leo XIV.

Minister Kombo, representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan, delivered warm greetings and a special message, reaffirming the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.

During the discussions, both parties focused on three key areas of shared interest: promoting peace and dialogue to ensure a stable and just international order, upholding human dignity as the foundation for social development, and strengthening collaboration in social services, particularly education and healthcare.

The Tanzanian government expressed gratitude for the Catholic Church’s significant role in national development, highlighting its extensive contributions to schools, hospitals, and scholarship programs.

Minister Kombo noted that opportunities provided to Tanzanian students in Pontifical institutions are critical in building essential skills and character for the country’s future.

The meeting also recognized the Church’s moral leadership in Tanzanian society. The Minister praised the Tanzania Episcopal Conference for promoting unity, hope, and social cohesion, especially during periods of political transition.

The Vatican visit marks a renewed commitment to deepen cooperation, particularly in education, healthcare, and civic engagement, further strengthening Tanzania’s longstanding partnership with the Holy See.
