Tanzania climbs FIFA rankings after historic AFCON run

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania has made significant progress in the latest FIFA rankings, reflecting the Taifa Stars’ growing stature in African and global football. The rise comes after the team’s historic performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they reached the Round of 16 for the first time.

According to FIFA, Tanzania moved up two places to 110th in the world, marking a milestone in the country’s football history.

The team’s strong showing at AFCON, including competitive matches against some of Africa’s top sides, was a key factor behind the rise.

Across Africa, Morocco recorded the biggest jump, climbing to eighth in the world despite losing the AFCON final to Senegal. Senegal also improved, moving up to 12th from 17th in 2024.

Nigeria, who finished third in the tournament, are now ranked 26th, while Egypt is 31st and Cameroon 45th. Gabon dropped sharply to 86th following an early exit from the competition.

At the global level, Spain retained the top spot, followed by Argentina, France, England, and Brazil. Portugal and the Netherlands occupy sixth and seventh places, respectively.

While Tanzania celebrated its rise, neighbouring countries faced setbacks. Uganda dropped three places to 88th after failing to win any match at AFCON, while Kenya’s Harambee Stars slipped to 113th, missing the tournament for the third consecutive time.

Football analysts say Tanzania’s progress reflects years of investment in youth development and domestic leagues, and they urge continued focus to maintain upward momentum on the global stage.

The rise in FIFA rankings is expected to boost national morale and inspire a new generation of players eager to represent the Taifa Stars on international platforms.
