The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has introduced a contractor who will electrify 175 hamlets in Mtwara region under the government’s “Hamlets Like Towns” initiative, aiming to improve livelihoods and boost local development.
Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Patrick Sawala, called on REA to closely supervise the contractor to ensure the project is completed on time, while pledging the regional office’s full support.
“I urge the Regional Office to receive the contractor’s work plan so we can monitor progress. For completed projects, REA should provide reports so communities can start using electricity immediately. Access to electricity drives the economy, creates jobs, and attracts investment,” Colonel Sawala said.
REA Project Management Manager, Mr. Deogratius Nagu, said the project will be implemented over three years, from January 2026 to January 2029, and is expected to benefit 5,646 residents across the region.
The contractor, Dieynem Company, represented by Mr. Novatus Lyimo, thanked the government for prioritizing local firms and promised to deliver the project within the set timeframe, ensuring communities enjoy the benefits of electricity without delays.
