Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has instructed officials at the Mwanza Regional Search and Rescue Coordination Center to operate around the clock, ensuring prompt and efficient emergency services for the public.

The state-of-the-art facility, valued at about TZS 19.8 billion, is a cornerstone of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives.

Speaking during his visit to the center on January 23, 2026, Dr. Nchemba stressed that rescue services are a matter of life and death, and any delay or negligence could have fatal consequences.

“This is a life-saving mission. Negligence, sleeping on duty, or delaying assistance puts Tanzanians’ lives at risk. This center must operate 24 hours a day without compromise,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that the center’s establishment reflects President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s dedication to serving citizens and addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

“This center was initially planned between 2018 and 2020 but stalled when some partners withdrew. President Dr. Samia insisted it be completed with government funding to ensure fishermen and other residents have access to safety services,” Dr. Nchemba added.

Officials at the center were reminded to uphold professionalism and maintain the highest standards of readiness to respond to emergencies at any time.

The facility is expected to play a critical role in enhancing safety across Lake Victoria and surrounding areas, particularly for the region’s fishing communities.
