President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening digital systems to reduce road accidents and traffic violations.
Dr. Mwinyi made the remarks on January 6, 2026, during a meeting with Tanzania’s Minister of Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, who visited the State House in Zanzibar for official talks.
The President said the completion of digital traffic management systems, along with the installation of traffic lights and speed control radars, will significantly help reduce traffic offenses, prevent fatalities, and lower the government’s healthcare costs caused by road accidents.
On the issue of gender-based violence, including rape, Dr. Mwinyi said the government has implemented strict measures, including denying bail to suspects and continuing public education campaigns to combat abuse and humiliation.
Regarding crime in tourist areas, the President noted that the government is intensifying efforts to improve security.
He urged hotel owners to install CCTV cameras to help prevent criminal activities and ensure the safety of visitors.
Dr. Mwinyi also praised the cooperation between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Zanzibar Government, particularly in strengthening the performance of the Immigration Department, the National Identification Authority (NIDA), and the Police Force. He called for continued collaboration to maintain and enhance these efforts.
Minister Simbachawene expressed satisfaction with the support and partnership provided by the Zanzibar Government in strengthening the operations of institutions under the Ministry of Home Affairs, including Immigration, NIDA, and the Police.
