MV Kazi Ferry returns to service after TZS30 million repair

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Services Agency (TEMESA) has completed repairs on the ferry MV Kazi, which developed a technical fault earlier this month, with services set to resume on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in the afternoon.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, TEMESA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mosses Mabamba, said the repair work took four days and cost a total of TZS30 million.

He said the maintenance was carried out to guarantee safety and improve the efficiency of ferry services for thousands of residents who depend on the Kigamboni–Ferry crossing.

“Test runs will be conducted tomorrow morning, and from around 2:00 pm the ferry will officially resume operations, providing relief to residents of the Ferry and Kigamboni areas and helping to ease transport challenges,” Mr Mabamba said.

According to him, MV Kazi has a capacity of 800 passengers and 20 vehicles per trip, which is expected to significantly reduce congestion and restore smooth transport across the channel.

Commuters who use the ferry welcomed the news, saying the return of MV Kazi would ease daily movements to workplaces, schools and business centres.

However, they called on the government to continue strengthening ferry services to avoid repeated disruptions.

Meanwhile, the government has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to improving marine transport, with ongoing rehabilitation works on MV Magogoni, which is expected to resume services in April.

Once completed, MV Magogoni will be able to carry up to 2,000 passengers and 60 vehicles per trip, underlining the government’s resolve to modernise marine transport infrastructure and ensure safe, reliable and sustainable services for the public.
