Permanent Secretary of the President’s Office (Union and Environment), Dr. Richard Muyungi, has paid a working visit to the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), meeting with its management to introduce himself and review the implementation of the council’s mandates.
The meeting, which included 13 regional managers from across the country, reviewed the council’s achievements, ongoing environmental challenges, and the overall state of the environment.
Discussions also highlighted economic opportunities in the environmental sector, particularly in waste recycling, which could attract investment while promoting sustainable environmental management.
Addressing the council, Dr. Muyungi praised NEMC for its work in protecting and managing the country’s environment and ensuring compliance with environmental laws.
“You are doing critical work in safeguarding our environment, but we must also embrace scientific and technological changes and respond to current societal needs. The digital era demands that environmental education reaches all communities efficiently,” he said.
Dr. Muyungi directed NEMC to establish an Innovation Unit tasked with generating new ideas to solve environmental challenges creatively and sustainably.
He also emphasized professionalism in project management, insisting that all development projects adhere to laws, regulations, and environmental conservation principles.
“Modern technology must be fully utilized to provide timely and accurate environmental data. This will improve decision-making and protect our national resources,” he added.
This was Dr. Muyungi’s first official visit to NEMC since his appointment as Permanent Secretary of the President’s Office (Union and Environment). Observers say the visit signals a new phase of strengthened collaboration, communication, and coordination in environmental governance in Tanzania.
