The Mbeya District Council has pledged TZS 20 million to repair facilities at Usongwe Secondary School damaged by heavy rains and strong winds on January 15, 2026.
The funds will be used to fix the girls’ Form Six dormitory, a staff office, and a clinic room, ensuring that teaching and learning continue without disruption.
The announcement was made on January 27, 2026, by the District Executive Director, Erica Yegella, while leading a tree-planting exercise at the school. Over 1,350 trees were planted as part of celebrations marking the birthday of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“These funds will help restore buildings damaged by the recent storm, which also affected students’ belongings, including clothing and essential school supplies,” Yegella said.
Gerald Shayo, the District Natural Resources and Environment Officer, emphasized that planting trees supports environmental conservation and disaster preparedness.
“We hope students will learn the importance of protecting the environment and reducing the impact of future storms,” he said.
Deputy Headteacher Leonard Chuwa reported that the storm caused the roof of the girls’ Form Six dormitory, a staff office, and the clinic to be blown off.
About 50 students lost personal items such as towels, notebooks, bed sheets, and mattresses. School kitchens and staff offices were also affected.
Chuwa said the school is continuing to educate students and staff on disaster preparedness, with tree planting as a key strategy to mitigate future risks.
“We are grateful to the District Council and the Executive Director for their swift response. Last year, they addressed damage to 13 toilet blocks by providing over TZS 3 million,” he added.
Following the storm, the Executive Director sent experts to assess the damage and later pledged TZS 20 million to restore the affected infrastructure.
