Makonda calls for immediate preparations ahead of AFCON 2027

Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Paul Makonda, has urged the government and stakeholders to begin preparations without delay for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He emphasized that school-level sports competitions across the country should be prioritized as part of the build-up to the prestigious tournament.

Makonda made the remarks today, January 13, 2026, upon arriving at the Ministry’s offices in Mtumba, Dodoma, just hours after being officially sworn in by President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the State House in Chamwino.

He highlighted that organizing sports competitions in primary and secondary schools will strengthen national unity, boost morale, and encourage Tanzanians to support the national football team, Taifa Stars.

Additionally, such initiatives will foster healthy competition that contributes to the long-term development of sports in the country.

“These competitions will act as a platform to identify and nurture new sporting talents from the grassroots, laying a solid foundation for sustained success in Tanzanian sports,” Makonda said.

The Minister also urged the Ministry to implement programs that provide professional training for school teachers who are passionate about sports. This will equip them with the skills to recognize, develop, and guide young talents effectively.

Makonda further noted that early preparations for AFCON 2027 are a strategic opportunity for Tanzania not only to field a competitive national team but also to use sports as a vehicle for job creation, national cohesion, and enhancing the country’s image internationally. The 2027 tournament is set to be co-hosted with neighboring Kenya and Uganda.
