Independent activists seek support to prevent unrest and safeguard peace in Tanzania

Two independent activists, Ahmed Kombo and Joseph Yona, have launched a nationwide Civic Education Tour on Patriotism, Peace and the Economy, an initiative aimed at strengthening national unity and safeguarding Tanzania’s long-standing culture of peace.

The tour, which will cover more than 15 regions in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, is designed to engage citizens directly through public meetings, community dialogues, seminars and civic education programmes.

The organisers say the initiative seeks to address the growing risks of social unrest driven by economic ignorance, misinformation, harmful propaganda and weak understanding of patriotism.

Speaking on the programme, Joseph Yona said Tanzania’s history is anchored in peace, unity and solidarity, values that require continuous protection through structured and inclusive public education. He noted that communities lacking civic and economic awareness are more vulnerable to division and instability.

Ahmed Kombo said the tour will pay special attention to young people, who are often targeted and exploited during periods of tension due to limited economic opportunities and inadequate knowledge.

He said empowering youth with economic literacy, entrepreneurship skills and a sense of national responsibility would turn them into agents of peace and development.

According to the organisers, the programme will focus on promoting genuine patriotism and civic responsibility, emphasising the importance of peace in national development, enhancing economic awareness and self-reliance, and equipping citizens with the skills to identify and counter misinformation and dangerous propaganda.

The tour will also underscore the role of citizens in protecting national stability and social cohesion.

To ensure the effective implementation of the initiative, the activists have called for support from government institutions, non-governmental organisations, faith-based and community organisations, the private sector and individual well-wishers.

The support, they said, will help meet the costs of travel across the regions, accommodation, production of educational materials and the organisation of public engagement activities.

Members of the public wishing to support the initiative can contribute through YAS number 0713 802 226 registered under the name of Joseph Yona, or through NMB Bank account number 24510065664 in the name of Joseph and Ahmed.

The organisers stressed that the tour is non-political and national in nature, focusing on the broader interests of the country and the wellbeing of present and future generations.

They emphasised that peace is not accidental but a product of education, unity and active citizen participation.

The National Civic Education Tour on Patriotism and the Economy seeks to reinforce Tanzania’s position as an island of peace, an economically resilient nation and a society built on lasting unity.
