The Government of Tanzania is intensifying efforts to educate Kigoma residents about hepatitis through a wide range of communication channels and community outreach initiatives.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Florence Samizi, highlighted the ongoing campaign in Parliament today, January 29, 2026, while responding to a question from Naomy Dungan Mwaipopo (Special Seats) on the Government’s strategy to raise awareness about hepatitis in Kigoma Region.
Dr. Samizi said the Government has been leveraging radio and television programs, newspapers, and social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to inform the public on preventive measures against the disease.
Health education content is also displayed on screens in patient waiting areas at health facilities.
The program focuses on community education about the importance of hepatitis testing, prevention, and treatment, while encouraging residents to get screened through community mobilizers.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that the Government is equipping health service providers to deliver accurate public education. So far, 102 providers have been trained in Kigoma Region.
Public awareness initiatives are ongoing through local and national media, including live Instagram sessions where hepatitis is discussed as a key health topic.
In addition, the Ministry has distributed leaflets and posters targeting various groups, including youth, adults, pregnant women, religious leaders, journalists, community leaders, long-distance drivers, miners, fishermen, and healthcare providers.
Dr. Samizi also highlighted the availability of free counseling services via toll-free lines 117 and 199, where trained advisors provide guidance on hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment.
