The Government, through the Ministry of Health, in partnership with Thamini Uhai, has launched strategic initiatives to reduce maternal and child deaths and strengthen health services across Tanzania.
Speaking at the launch of the “Safe Mother and Child” project in Dodoma on January 28, 2026, Dr. Ahmad Makuwani, Director of the Department of Reproductive, Maternal, and Child Health, said the Government is committed to implementing effective strategies in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the project delivers tangible results.
“The Ministry continues to put in place robust measures to prevent maternal deaths. Collaboration with development partners is key to ensuring the project’s success,” Dr. Makuwani said.
He also highlighted the importance of training supervisors and other stakeholders participating in the project to enhance efficiency and accountability.
Dr. Sunday Dominico, Project Director at Thamini Uhai and President of the Association of Specialist Doctors in Obstetrics and Gynecology, said the five-year initiative will be implemented in Kigoma, Katavi, and Geita regions.
“The project focuses on improving maternal and child health services, including emergency obstetric care, neonatal care, and support for low birth weight infants,” Dr. Dominico explained.
He further revealed that Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation are funding the project, working alongside the Government to strengthen Tanzania’s health sector.
“To ensure the project meets its goals, we will establish a joint monitoring system to track progress and ensure a significant reduction in maternal and child deaths during childbirth,” Dr. Dominico said.
The Director of Thamini Uhai reiterated the organization’s commitment to improving health services, stating: “We are determined to implement a project that guarantees safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for mothers and children.”
The initiative comes at a critical time as Tanzania intensifies efforts to meet global targets for reducing maternal and child mortality, reflecting the Government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and protecting vulnerable populations.
