Government of Tanzania, under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has allocated over four billion shillings to provide free hernia surgeries across the country, ensuring citizens access life-saving treatment at no cost.
Chief Government Surgeon, Dr. Grace Magembe, said the initiative is conducted professionally, with patients receiving local anesthesia that allows them to remain conscious during surgery.
She spoke today, January 25, 2026, while visiting the ongoing hernia surgery camp at Kilakala Health Center in Temeke, Dar es Salaam.
“Since the start of the camps in Dar es Salaam, more than 1,300 people have come forward. Of these, 668 were diagnosed with hernias, and 457 have undergone surgery. Our target is to reach 500 patients at Kilakala and Kinondoni health centers,” Dr. Magembe said.
She urged residents to maintain environmental hygiene by covering stagnant water and trimming grass to prevent mosquito breeding, which helps reduce disease risks.
Dr. Magembe also reminded citizens to enroll in the National Health Insurance Fund, following directives from President Dr. Samia within her first 100 days in office.
Dar es Salaam Regional Chief Surgeon, Dr. Mohammed Mang’una, called on citizens, especially those over 45 years old, to take advantage of the free services while available.
The hernia surgery campaign will continue in other regions, including Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani, Morogoro, and Mbeya, reflecting the government’s commitment to expanding access to essential health services.
