Tanzania’s sports fraternity is in deep mourning following the death of Peter Manyika, a former goalkeeper for Taifa Stars, Young Africans SC (Yanga), and Mtibwa Sugar, who passed away earlier today while receiving treatment in hospital.

The news has been confirmed by the Tanzania Veterans Sports Association (UMSOTA), whose Chairperson Faza Lusozi said the late Manyika died during medical care, with his body currently being kept at Mwananyamala Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

“The body of the deceased is being preserved at Mwananyamala Hospital. Further updates on funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course,” Lusozi said.

Manyika is remembered as one of Tanzania’s most respected goalkeepers, renowned for his discipline, strong leadership at the back, and unwavering dedication on the field.

Throughout his career, he enjoyed successful stints with Mtibwa Sugar and Yanga SC, earning admiration for his consistency and professionalism before going on to represent the national team, Taifa Stars, where he further cemented his legacy in Tanzanian football.

His passing has left a profound void in the country’s football community, particularly among former players and emerging talents who regarded him as a mentor and an inspiration both on and off the pitch.

UMSOTA has joined family members, friends, and sports stakeholders across the nation in mourning the loss, calling for unity, respect, and calm as burial preparations continue.

Peter Manyika’s contribution to Tanzanian football will be remembered for generations. May he rest in eternal peace.
