Electricity to reach communities along EACOP route in Tanzania

Communities along the route of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Tanzania are set to gain access to electricity under a new five-year partnership between the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and EACOP. The initiative is expected to transform social services and boost economic activities in rural areas.

The agreement, signed today, January 23, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, was formalized by REA Director General Engineer Hassan Saidy and EACOP Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Dulout.

Engineer Saidy said the collaboration will ensure that villages and communities along the pipeline—from Kagera to Tanga regions benefit directly from electricity access.

“This initiative will not only light homes but will also strengthen schools, health centers, and water projects, while stimulating productive activities and rural businesses,” he explained.

Mr. Dulout highlighted that the project’s implementation reflects EACOP’s commitment to improving the quality of life for communities along the pipeline corridor.

The pipeline in Tanzania passes through eight regions, 27 councils, and 231 villages, touching the lives of thousands of rural residents.

The REA-EACOP agreement marks a significant step in ensuring that electricity reaches these communities, paving the way for social and economic development.
