Aweso calls for fast completion of Mkinga–Horohoro water project

The Minister for Water,  Jumaa Aweso (Mp), has direct  the speedy completion of the Mkinga–Horohoro Water Supply Project in Mkinga, Tanga Region, to ensure residents access clean and safe water.

He made a  call when receiving  water pipes worth TZS 7.8 billion, which will be laid across 23 kilometers. 

The distance will help to serve more than 57,334 residents in 10 wards and 37 villages along the Tanga–Horohoro , including the Horohoro border area.

“The pipes have arrived. The remaining work must be completed quickly so that Mtimbwani Village starts receiving water by the end of January 2026, ” Minister Aweso said.

He directed RUWASA Tanga Region and Tanga UWASA to closely supervise the contractor to ensure timely completion of the  35.47 billion project. 

Currently, the project is 65 percent complete, with 39 kilometers of pipelines already installed. 


The project draws  water from the Zigi River via the Mabayani Dam and Mowe Water Treatment Plant.

It is expected to reduce water shortages and salinity challenges and increase water coverage in Mkinga District to 88 percent by July 5, 2026.
