Zanzibar government forms commission to address compensation for development projects

President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi has established a special commission to review and address compensation issues arising from government development projects across Unguja and Pemba. 

The move aims to ensure fairness and transparency in handling claims from communities affected by these projects.

The Commission to Review and Evaluate Compensation Issues is mandated to examine compensation claims, resolve disputes, and advise the government on the best steps to protect the interests of citizens and stakeholders.

The commission brings together eight experts from diverse fields, reflecting the government’s commitment to professional and balanced oversight. 

Members include Salum Othman Simba, retired public servant and valuation expert; Mussa Kombo Mrisho, lawyer from the President’s Office; Khamis Muhidin Bakari, engineer at Zanzibar Airports Authority; Fauzia Sindi Hassan, registrar of the Contractors Registration Board Zanzibar; Sabrina Yussuf Shaaban, ICT specialist at the President’s Office; Mwanaidi Suleiman Ali, social science expert from Zanzibar Anti-Corruption Authority (ZAECA); Ramadhan Nassoro Mwinyi, finance and investment expert; and Mzee Abdalla Khatib, public administration expert.

The government has called on the public to cooperate with the commission during its field visits, which will help gather information necessary for fair and timely resolution of claims.

Deputy Director of Communications at Ikulu, Raqey Mohamed, said the commission reflects the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and ensuring that citizens affected by development projects are treated fairly.

By forming this commission, the Zanzibar government aims to strengthen trust with communities, protect citizens’ rights, and support sustainable development across the islands.
