The government has issued firm new directives to speed up the completion of the Mkuyuni Bridge in Mwanza, assuring residents that the long-awaited project will be delivered by January 15, 2026.
The move aims to end persistent challenges faced by communities in the area, particularly during heavy rains.
On December 11, 2025, Minister for Works Abdallah Ulega inspected the project and ordered contractor Jassie and Company (JASCO) to accelerate ongoing works in line with a directive from Prime Minister Dkt. Mwigulu Nchemba.
“I was sent by the Prime Minister because of the delays. I want to assure you that on January 15, 2026, I will be here. We are not adding even a second for the contractor. Work day and night,” Ulega said, underscoring the government’s resolve to ensure timely delivery.
A major public concern has been the heavy dust from construction activities. Addressing this, Ulega directed TANROADS Mwanza Regional Manager Eng. Pascal Ambrose to enforce strict daily water sprinkling to protect residents from the nuisance.
“Make sure there is no dust. These areas must be watered at all times. Citizens should not be suffering from dust. This is not negotiable it must be done,” Ulega insisted.
He also emphasized the importance of local participation in the project, urging the contractor to employ more young people from the surrounding communities.
He added that night work must continue with proper lighting to maintain construction pace and support local economic activity.
Eng. Ambrose confirmed that the bridge is being built at a cost of TZS 5.1 billion. The project was originally expected to be completed by November 13, 2025, but the contractor was granted a 76-day extension due to various implementation challenges.
The renewed urgency follows the Prime Minister’s inspection of infrastructure projects in Mwanza on December 5, where he directed Minister Ulega to return to Mkuyuni and assess the causes of the delays firsthand.
For residents, the government’s intervention signals a stronger commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that improves mobility, reduces seasonal disruptions, and boosts economic opportunities across the region.
