Vice President Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi is expected to be the guest of honour at the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Bukoba Campus in Kalabagaine Village, Bukoba District, Kagera Region.
Kagera Regional Commissioner, Ms Fatma Mwassa, said this while addressing journalists at her office, noting that the event is scheduled for December 15 this year. The ceremony will be officiated by former President Jakaya Kikwete, who currently serves as the Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam.
Ms Mwassa said the establishment of the university campus is expected to unlock new socio-economic opportunities in the region, including improved access to higher education, job creation, and regional development.
Speaking on the project’s progress, Deputy Project Coordinator Prof. Liberato Haule said the campus will initially accommodate up to 800 students upon completion.
He explained that the first phase is expected to enroll 660 students in the 2026/2027 academic year, with student numbers projected to rise to 1,600 by 2030 as the institution expands.
According to Prof. Haule, the Bukoba campus will offer academic programmes in business and technology, alongside a dedicated centre for business advisory services aimed at supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.
