Tanzania urges international partners to respect national mechanisms

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of Tanzania has called on international partners and development institutions to allow national mechanisms to handle post-election matters, following statements on incidents of unrest during and after the General Election held on October 29, 2025. The announcement was made in a statement to the media on Friday, December 5, 2025.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, statements on Tanzania were issued by countries including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Ghana, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute.

The government expressed surprise at some of the content of these statements, especially given the open discussions held on November 28, 2025, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the ambassadors of these nations in Tanzania.

While acknowledging the role of the international community in promoting democracy and development, Tanzania stressed that the Commission of Inquiry tasked with investigating post-election unrest should be allowed to carry out its work independently and prepare a comprehensive report.

“This report will provide a full understanding of the events and serve as the basis for future consultations and cooperation in building a peaceful and united nation,” the statement said.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation for peace and development, urging all stakeholders to respect Tanzania’s national processes.

It also assured partners that dialogue and collaboration on issues of mutual interest will continue on the principles of equality and mutual respect.
