The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Africa Global Logistics (AGL) Tanzania Ltd, a subsidiary of MSC, for the design, construction, and operation of three new berths at the Bagamoyo Port.
The MoU was signed on December 6, 2025, at TPA Headquarters in Dar es Salaam between TPA Director General, Mr. Plasduce Mbossa, and AGL President, Philippe Labonne.
Mr. Mbossa stated that the signing of the MoU marks the beginning of the Bagamoyo Port project, where AGL will start designing and constructing three modern berths out of the 28 planned for the port, as well as two new modern berths at the Dar es Salaam Port.
AGL President, Philippe Labonne, said they chose to invest in Tanzania due to its peaceful and secure environment, making it an ideal location for transportation and trade.
"Tanzania is strategically located and offers a conducive business environment, making it a hub for national and international trade," he said.
The project is expected to be completed within 36 months, and AGL was chosen for its expertise in transportation and logistics services. AGL is part of the global AGL group (formerly Bolloré T&L) and is now under MSC.
The company offers a range of services including transportation, cargo management, international shipping, and customs services, catering to various sectors such as mining, oil, food, and humanitarian aid.
The development of the Bagamoyo Port is expected to boost Tanzania's economy by increasing trade and commerce in the region.
The port is strategically located to serve as a gateway to the landlocked countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The signing of the MoU is a significant milestone in the development of the Bagamoyo Port, and TPA is committed to working with AGL to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
The project is part of the government's efforts to develop the country's infrastructure and improve its logistics and transportation sector.
The Bagamoyo Port is expected to play a crucial role in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a Chinese-led infrastructure development project aimed at connecting Asia with Europe and Africa.
The development of the Bagamoyo Port is also expected to increase competition in the region, with neighboring ports such as Mombasa and Nairobi looking to improve their services and infrastructure to remain competitive.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy, with the creation of new jobs and opportunities for local businesses.
The port is also expected to increase trade and commerce in the region, with the potential to become a major hub for international trade.
The TPA and AGL are working together to ensure that the project is implemented smoothly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to the local community and environment.
The project is expected to be completed on schedule, and the port is expected to be operational by 2028.
