Tanzania takes a stand against drug-resistant diseases to protect families and communities

Tanzanians are being urged to join the fight against drug-resistant diseases that threaten lives, livelihoods, and the environment.

Vice President Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, speaking at the opening of Africa’s regional celebrations of International Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Week, said protecting communities starts with responsible use of medicines and strong regional cooperation.

At the event held at Hyatt Regency, Dar es Salaam, Dr. Nchimbi highlighted that Tanzania is prioritizing the health of its people by strengthening healthcare systems, supporting research, and promoting correct medicine use.

“Drug-resistant infections are no longer just a medical issue—they affect our families, our farms, and our future,” he said.

The Vice President urged African countries to unite against this growing threat by sharing knowledge, coordinating policies, and supporting responsible use of life-saving medicines.

He emphasized that infections cross borders, so collaboration across the continent is vital.

Dr. Nchimbi also stressed the importance of innovation and research in finding new ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat infections.

Developing new vaccines, alternative treatments, and diagnostic tools will reduce reliance on traditional drugs and help communities better manage emerging resistant diseases.

He appealed directly to Tanzanians to take responsibility in their daily lives: complete prescribed treatments, avoid misuse of antibiotics and other drugs, and follow health advice.

“Communities play a key role. By protecting ourselves and our families, we protect the whole nation,” he said.

The Vice President said Tanzania has made progress but warned that more action is needed. This includes improving infection surveillance, preventing disease spread in healthcare facilities and farms, and ensuring medicines are used safely in humans and animals.

He emphasized continued research and innovation to make treatments more effective for everyone.

The week-long AMR celebrations, from December 2 to 5, 2025, bring together health stakeholders across Africa under the theme: “Act Now: Protect Today, Secure Tomorrow,” urging immediate action to safeguard lives and communities for the future.
