TANESCO reports Mwanza power disruptions due to substation maintenance delay

By Our Correspondent Reporter

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has explained temporary power outages in parts of Mwanza City and surrounding areas, attributing the disruptions to delays in maintenance work at the Nyakato Power Receiving and Distribution Substation.

In a statement released on Sunday, December 22, 2025, TANESCO said the maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the reliability and quality of electricity services to meet the growing demand in Mwanza and neighbouring regions.

The utility noted that the maintenance was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 21, 2025, from 2:00 am to 11:00 am, with planned outages expected in certain areas.

However, heavy rainfall in the early hours disrupted the work schedule, delaying the start of maintenance activities.

According to TANESCO, the maintenance eventually began at around 6:00 pm and concluded at 5:00 am, extending beyond the initially planned timeframe.

This led to longer-than-expected interruptions in electricity supply in some parts of the city.

The company emphasised that the ongoing work at the Nyakato substation is vital for improving the stability and efficiency of power supply in Mwanza, especially as electricity demand continues to rise.

TANESCO assured customers that it will provide timely updates on any future maintenance that could affect supply.

While apologising for the inconvenience, TANESCO thanked residents for their patience and cooperation during the implementation of the essential works.

The statement was issued by TANESCO’s Directorate of Customer Services and Communications at the company’s head office in Dodoma.
